CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH DISCOVERY
Students Discover Sacramento, Hangtown, and Coloma
Day one…the State Capitol of California where students will explore and visit the Assembly and House. Next stop is Sutter's Fort where, with costumed interpreters, students will tour and use a scavenger hunt to learn the history of the fort. Then on to the California Railroad Museum where students will participate in special interactive programs to bring to life the history of the Transcontinental railroad. Explore Old Town Sacramento where the first Well's Fargo bank is located and the last stop on the Pony Express.
Day two….Students become pioneers as they participate in an historical moving West program at Camp Far West. Spending a day as an 1800's Pioneer heading west, you will learn dry gold digging, blacksmithing, leather making, and will use Covered Wagons to help you cross the prairie. A BBQ, camp fire, stories, and songs end the day.
Day three…Learn all about hard rock mining at the Gold Bug Mine. Located in Placerville, step back to the mid 1800's to an excellent example of hard rock mining. Explore the Joshua Hendy stamp mill and learn about theprocess of gold extraction from quartz. On the American River in Coloma students will visit Marshall Gold Historic State Park. Pan for gold and witness where gold was first discovered. That afternoon students will participate in a melodrama about the story of the Gold Rush.
